Today, I dropped my 25,000th Entrecard. I would have never imagined all the way back on the 17th of December 2007, when I first installed Entrecard on this blog, that it would become such a phenomenon. Looking back, it’s been quite the wild ride… I’ve put a massive amount of time and effort into becoming one of the top users in the system, and I’ve got back quite a bit from it.
I’ve seen my blog go from absolute no name, to a site that most people will actually remember. I’ve made many friends among the blogosphere, and participated in some pretty cool events and contests. I’ve watched Entrecard grow and flourish.

A little history
I remember back when I first signed up, John Chow was the king of Entrecard, and everyone was complaining because he was just too popular to beat. I always thought that was pretty funny, because it sounded like he would never lose the throne, but I didn’t believe that one bit.
Right away, I started power dropping, and I saw my own popularity rise. There was a direct correlation there, the more you gave to the Entrecard community, the more you got back. That’s the golden rule, one I’m glad I figured out early.
Then came along Saphrym, who finally took John Chow down, and became the new number 1. Being an extremely active member in the community, his unique “brand” and his $250 contest surely put him on the top. Heck even now he’s the only extra moderator in the forums, but alas, he is no longer the top dog.
Only recently has he lost the top spot to Hochstadt, who I think has earned the top spot much in the same way Saphrym had, with his unique blog brand and involvement in the community.
Personally, I made it as high as #3 on the most popular page (although, I don’t have a screenshot to prove it :P), and I definitely noticed a sharp increase in traffic by being up there. Even being in the top 3 of your category is a great step up.
How did I rise the ranks? Well, I tried my best to get to know a lot of bloggers (see my message box count!), but it all comes down to dropping.
My Dropping
I dropped 300 cards a day almost from the very first day. I started off by building a big list of blogs from 2-3 categories close to mine, and just started dropping. Eventually I trimmed this, added that, refined my list. Then, scrapped it and started all over again. I’ve tweaked my bookmark list constantly, including those who drop and comment on my blog, then dropping inactive blogs and non-reciprocated.
Most people say that the whole bookmark list power dropping method is totally not what Entrecard is all about, but I disagree. I work hard to choose blogs I know are good, and read and comment all the time as I go along.
Honestly, I’ve spent hundreds of hours dropping and working on my list, I think anyway you can make things easier on yourself, you should do. Entrecard is great, but it shouldn’t take over your life.
Writing quality posts should be your number 1 priority, not spending 4-5 hours dropping cards.
Now with the implementation of the drop inbox, I have an almost perfect mix of bookmarked blogs and reciprocal dropping, and it’s working great. I would definitely recommend this strategy for anyone wanting to hit 300 drops a day.
Boy, I’ve dropped a lot, and hence been dropped on a lot as well. In fact, I’ve accumulated almost 40,000 credits from drops alone! Where have all the credits gone?
My Advertising
I only have about 2000ec in my account right now, and I barely ever have more than 3000ec at one time. I don’t believe in hoarding credits, or selling them for real money.
Recently, there has been a bit of debate as to how effective advertising actually is. A lot of users have decided to give up on it all together, because of the generally low click returns. This is really only a small piece of the puzzle though.
The most important thing of all is branding. Getting people to remember your site is crucial, and them seeing your ad as they do their drops helps big time. Once they start recognizing your image, every time they see it helps them remember you.
That’s why I like to advertise on a real variety of blogs, 95% of the time though I will go for either high cost ads that get a lot of drops a day, or super cheap ads to potentially get new visitors, or at least, the owner to drop on my site!
So, after all this time, what has Entrecard done for me traffic wise?
My Traffic
Let’s thank big Mr. Google for Analytics, the sickest stat tracking system out there. Here are my entire Entrecard traffic statistics ever since the day I joined:
Hits from Entrecard.com: 7,791
Hits from Ads: 3,840
I would get into more detail, but honestly there’s just too much info to lay out here (and the graphs are too big :P). I think this Entrecard quickstats picture will explain my traffic well enough (there is a bit of a discrepancy between Google and Entrecard over number of ad clicks I received)

Overall, even though according to Google, the Entrecard traffic is fairly fast to leave, and page views are pretty low, the stats were better than I expected. Honestly, when I first signed up I figured the traffic would be horrible, but it’s not the case.
If you write good content, droppers will stop to take a look, comment, and maybe even subscribe your feed. The community is super strong with Entrecard, and it’s just awesome pure and simple.
The Future
Even though Entrecard has really taken up a lot more time than I expected, or wanted really, I don’t see myself stopping anytime soon. It is just too valuable of a blogging tool.
For a new-growing blog, it is bar none the best tool you can use to get your name out there, and become known within the blogosphere. I don’t think Yimto would be anywhere near this point had it not been for Entrecard.
So to Graham, Phirate, and all the other members of the Entrecard team, I say thanks, and keep up the amazing job!

Tim, I am very happy to see that you are a high powered EC dropper and that you have succeeded in getting good traffic from it. Your blog has experienced a lot of growth as a result of this, and your skyrocketing Technorati authority.
Personally, I don’t have time to drop 300+ cards a day, but for those like you who can, I say keep on doing it!
Congratulations, see you soon.
Fabien
I totally agree about the quality of the average Entrecard visitor. If you measure purely by aggregate stats, it won’t look good. But then what you will miss is the all the regular readers you do capture, and the fact that Entrecards are always eager to backlink, makes it very much worth the while.
I have noticed that click through rates on my ads are way down, but I suspect that may be because I haven’t changed my logo at all? Not sure.
I’ve actually never changed my Entrecard logo from day one!
I think it’s helped with brand recognition overall. If I ever do change it (which, with upcoming design changes, I probably will), I’ll make sure it stays as similar as possible, to retain that recognition.
That is a lot of cards. Entrecard has been a great helps for my new blog to get off the ground. It must be on your list because I see your card quite often. I visit here when I can, unfortunately other work has been keeping me busy. Congrats on 25000 drops. Hope you keep coming back to Epiblogger.
The content part of your post is right on, in fact I just posted something similar today. If you update regularly and start to get a following from Entrecard, then the traffic will start to stick around and bounce rates will go down. Entrecard does the work of getting people to your site, as bloggers we are still responsible for getting them to stay.
Thanks for all of the tips to you give, your blog is one that I look forward to dropping on every day.
Congratulations Tim, you’ve worked hard to gain recognition for Yimto, and I’m delighted for you that it’s paid off.
So many people moan about the quality of Entrecard traffic, but what do these people want? Spoonfeeding? If the content is there, a percentage of any traffic source will stick. Too many people want something for nothing, I guess.
Anyways, well done YOU;-D

Congrates on 25000 drops, wow it’s amazing! Yes, you are right Entrecard is not only for just getting traffic on blog, if we right good article than sure visitor stop and read the article. It’s the unique way to find the blog of interest.
Fun post and nice job. Hard work pays off, and all that jazz, too!
That is amazing…and it is a huge investment of your time and energy, but I too have found that it’s added alot of traffic to the blog an I’ve only been at it for a couple of weeks…continued success!!!
I would love to be able to drop 300 per day, but unfortunately, if I did that my wife would emasculate me.
I hear some people say that you can’t get much quality traffic from entrecard, but I disagree; if you know how to do it and where to place your ads, it is possible to get true quality traffic from the system.
Congrats on your 25000th drop, by the way
I think there has only been one day I dropped 300 cards. You’re the man. I know the traffic I get from 60-100 drops a day has been better than expected and worth the time. It’s good to know that this pays off at 300 drops a day.
Wow, thats alot of dropping. I am new to ec and have barely been able to drop 100 cards in a day. My question is if I want to someday monetize my blog..what kind of traffic should I expect to have before I decide to do so? Right now I only have about 350 unique visitors each day coming to my site.
omg Tim congratulations!! For a time (2 may be 3 weeks), I dropped 300 cards per day but I could not keep that rhythm, but you do!
Congrats once again
That is amazing.. i love EntreCard.
Thanks a lot for all the responses, I really love hearing from you guys!
@Lee: Yep, you are on my list. Great blog
@B Carter: Yes you’re definitely right, I’ve found loads of blogs I love to read as I drop too. I’m glad you enjoy mine!
@Reward Rebel: Thanks Layne! I quite agree it’s funny how many people are quick to blame Entrecard first, when really they should be looking in the mirror first
@Entrecard Blog: Sweet, featured
@Amy: Yeah it’s definitely a big time investment, but it remains one of the best ways to get noticed.
@Periapex: Hahaha luckily, I’m single so I don’t have to worry about that
An hour a day though is all it takes normally to get everything done.
@Stephan: I definitely believe you can be totally successful without dropping 300 a day. It’s all about the connections. Like, take for example my drop/dropped ratio. Plenty of people I’ve dropped on don’t return the favor, but it’s helped me at least discover those who do.
@Rick: It can be tough to know when to monetize a blog, but the only piece of advice I can give is don’t jump the gun. It’s not worth selling your blog’s soul for chump change.
@Mr. Javo: It’s just a habit you have to get into, it’s not even hard to do anymore really. But the time I’ve invested to get to this point is pretty huge
Thanks for all the congratulations
You are really dedicated…I don’t know if I would be able to continue dropping that many cards!!! I just signed up yesterday and I am already seeing some good results.
Hi, great to hear that but I wonder that you are spending 24hours/day to drop cards or using a software to do that?
Congrats on making that new 25 grand mark, that is a huge accomplishment in dedication… I don’t think I could have ever done it that fast
Well done Tim… good post, and I agree with keeping a good list of bookmarks.
That’s really awesome. It must take a lot of discipline to do that.
25k drops! That’s quite a feat. Congratulations.
You are a true entrecarder Tim One of the finest ever. Thanks for dropping by my blog almost daily. You have been part of my drop rank wall and will be part of future entrecard drop walls that I will reset. Your kidness in dropping almost daily paid you more than just traffic - friendship.
Congratulations .I didn’t know anything about Entercard till now.I feel it is good or not so good .I will give this a try.
I have not dropped nearly that many - but i joined about when you did. Sounds like you and i have had similar good experiences with entrecard.
Good work there Tim, congrats and keep up the good work…I’ll definitely take a look into entrecard now
It takes someone dedicated to dropping to reach that plateau. I have just hit 20,000, so I have an idea of what it takes to do that many drops.
Thanks some more for all the congratulations
@thebaglady: It all starts with the first drop
Keep it up!
@Tinh: As I said in the post, it takes me about an hour a day. And no, I never use software as that is not allowed. Entrecard is very smart, they will catch anyone exploiting the system fast.
@Wangbu: Such kind words! Thanks a lot, I really appreciate it! Keep up the good work
@Paul: Hey congrats to you too! Race to 50k??? Hahahaha maybe not
