Article marketing is a very hot button topic lately among the affiliate marketing community. It’s a very interesting concept, and when used correctly, can bring you a lot of free, targeted traffic.

What it consists of is submitting articles to article directories such as EzineArticles and Article Dashboard, which allow you to add links in an author/resource box. Readers will quite often click these links to learn more if the information is good.

As an affiliate marketer, there are many techniques which could make article marketing very worth while to your bottom line, specifically if you own your own site.

First of all, aside from the targeted traffic, you can get high quality backlinks from established sites (i.e. the article directories) with whatever anchor text you want. That will surely help with your search engine rankings for your target keywords.

You will also have people take your article from these sites, and re-publish it on their own sites, giving you potentially many one-way links from a variety of other sites. You could also see a small (very small most likely) amount of traffic trickle in from them as well.

You can have the traffic land on a product recommendation or review page related to the article topic and chances are you will see some affiliate sales. (However, linking directly to affiliate programs in your resource box is often not allowed)

Another great feature is that your articles themselves can actually rank high on search engines, and in turn get more people coming to your site through your resource box links.

Overall, it’s a great concept, and many people have made lots of money after a couple of months simply by submitting a few articles a day.

However there are some pitfalls to watch out for. For example, what you are really doing is giving these article directories free content that they in turn make money from piling on Google ads and such. So you want to make sure that the articles you submit get maximum exposure and click through rates.

Unfortunately, this process can be a bit unpredictable. Here’s an example:

Article Marketing Start-Up Guide

This is a screenshot of my EzineArticles account. As you can see, one of the articles FAR outperformed the others, and is the 4th most viewed in its category.

It’s also the #2 Google result for my keyword, which gets about 37 searches a day according to Wordtracker. You can see how having a dozen of those could really rake in the cash for you.

So almost 800 hits from about 30 mins of work, and no money spent; not bad! (and I’m not a very fast article writer yet!)

The other articles, which actually seemed much better to me from their titles (and content), did not perform as well.

Of course, these were my first attempts, and I know that with practice and testing, you will most likely see more and more great results, so I definitely still think that article marketing is a great tool and I recommend you experiment with it right away!
