This topic is simple enough really, but it was quite difficult to figure out when I was writing my free report.
You see, I knew that there were many capable PDF generating programs out there, so I wrote my entire report in a word document, knowing that I could later convert it into a PDF.
That was true, but there is a MAJOR flaw in those programs.
When I finished writing it, and had placed all my resource links inside, I generated the PDF file, and NONE of the links worked. They were just blue and underlined.
This is a huge problem, as those links are a key part of the report. So I researched and researched about this issue. It seems this is cause by these programs using something called GhostScript, which has a GNU General Public License so anyone can copy, redistribute, and use it. All of these free .doc to .pdf converters used it.
However, it does not like links.
Luckily, there was actually a very simple solution, and that is to use OpenOffice. Their word processor, called Writer, allows you to export your documents directly to PDF, and everything works perfectly. And it’s free!
I quite like OpenOffice now, and find myself using it more and more. I definitely recommend you try it out if you plan to produce PDFs in the future.
You can get the free download here. (around 100mb)
