To really succeed with internet affiliate marketing, you need to implement a lot of different methods for building traffic, getting backlinks, creating content etc. etc. etc. Just using one or two techniques won’t really cut it in the long run. It requires a lot of work and good marketing techniques to create a site that makes substantial income.
Of course, I know you know this already (I hope!). But, researching and using all of these techniques efficiently can be an extremely daunting task.
Let me give you an example that you may have already experienced. Today, I decided it would be a good idea to draw out a “marketing mind map” to plan ahead what kind of promotion I would use and to estimate my costs. Since I’m not rich just yet ;), I want to be frugal, yet still make sure my sites get enough exposure to succeed.
So I outlined every marketing tool and technique I would use and how they all linked together. This spun off into a massive research session about how to do each of these things properly and such. By the end of the day, I was so overwhelmed with information and stuff I had to do that it actually started to get me down.
There’s just so much to do, and so many things to try, a lot of which have uncertain outcomes. It can be hard to stay optimistic when looking at such a mountain of work! If you were to jump from task to task, trying to work on everything at the same time, you would never get anything done, and you would definitely forget a lot of stuff. In fact I’m sure I’ve already forgotten some of the stuff I read today ><
That’s why it’s important to develop a singular focus. Just doing this can turn the mountain into a mole hill.
If you start by tackling one affiliate marketing technique or strategy, it will get your full attention, so you will be able to learn the best methods to implement it, and then do it. Afterwards, you can do the same for another strategy, and slowly incorporate it into your marketing efforts. That way, more things get done, and you have a strong base to build on. If you were to do everything at once, you would have a lot of trouble building a plan that you can reuse for future sites.
By taking things one step at a time, you will not only get more things done, you will get them done faster and better. Then once you have developed your master template plan of action, and are generating some substantial income, you can outsource a lot of this work, and create more successful sites even faster!
It’s the first success that’s the most difficult. Take it one step at a time.

This is the exact opposite of what I did when I first tried affiliate marketing…I tried to do a ga-zillion things at one time and created half-ass content/sites. Right now, I just started focusing on one project about a couple of months ago. I’ve leared alot and plan on implementing it on my next project, which i’m launching in a couple of weeks. Good post man.
It is very true that nothing comes for free. If making money was that easy, everyone of us would have been a rich guy. However, there is always a brighter side. A planned sustained effort in affiliate marketing would indeed help you to earn a steady income. I am also in queue but my blog is more for social cause.
There is just so much to do, so many things to try, a lot of which have uncertain outcomes. This sentiment really struck a chord. And I will like to add; things change so very quickly.
I was very happy to discover and employ a method to boost my Google rankings quickly. But recently, Google started to look at things differently and all my work is unraveling.
On a positive note, there are many way to skin the proverbial cat, so I’m not giving up.
Great attitude Pam, IM really can be a test of determination and perseverance, and it sure isn’t easy.
Even though that one strategy may be unraveling, I’m sure it will have a residual effect on your site, and can only be of help in the future.
Every little bit counts.
[...] Don’t Get Overwhelmed By Internet Marketing [...]
I just read the web2.0 authority black book by Jack Humphrey and it details an EXTREMELY large amount of work to be done in order to truly take advantage of social marketing…it’s actually difficult to just do one step at a time because you have to constantly keep your eyes on all the marketing ‘gauges’ like flying an airplane.
What we really need to master is: the fine art of multi-tasking…
Thanks for the post. It is so easy to get distracted and feel that you need to focus on every method out there to get traffic to your sites. Getting focused does provided more momentum as you master tasks.
