Hi John, thanks for taking the time to respond,

I do agree with you that a lot of self-help stuff is driven by profits. I know that the secret has a seminar that costs like $2000 to attend, which is pretty insane.

Of course they will cross-promote each other as well, it's a marketing game like any other. But I do think there is value in what they sell to people who are willing to apply the concepts.

You could say the same thing about the make money niche. Everyone is running around looking for the silver platter. They buy and buy, and while they do get genuinely good information that can make them money, they never put it to work because they want the easy way. So they continue buying based on promises and hype.

BUT, while some of your points may apply to other self-help materials, I think you've got it wrong about the secret.

The secret doesn't tell you how to live, and I think calling it a cult just because it suggests a more positive outlook on life is a little out there.

There's no brainwashing here :P What I took from it was to take my focus away from self-destructive thoughts, and put it towards achieving my goals. Visualize what I *want*, and believing that it is within my reach; that's good motivation!

The secret tells you plain and simple; you are in control of your own destiny. It just helps you achieve what you really want.

Hi Tim,

Michael from Germany here.

I discovered the Secret not so long ago, and it touched me deeply. Changed my life to the better.

Even made me go global with my blog and biz.

The Law of Attraction is working. Always and everywhere. Under any circumstances. Not only amongst mankind. Don’t believe it?

Well, watch the video on my blog at

the movie was great, the book was even better. I started using the journal they offered up for sale and I can say that since then it has made a huge improvement in my life - financial, personal, and spiritual.

I have not seen this movie, but strongly agree with your insights on it. Are we even aware how often we get sucked into the negativity? I started wearing whats called a wellness bracelet, and the object is not to complain about stupid things, life is to short and that negativity just balls up all around us, and encompasses us and the disease begins. You put it on your left wrist, and when you begin to complain, it goes to the right wrist. Heck, I didn't even make it out the door in the morning and its on the right wrist!

I think that if we would spend more time imagining the better side instead of ripping people apart and being in such heated competitions all the time, we can manifest alot of what we wish for. Has it worked entirely for me, not completely - cuz the damn bracelets on the wrong hand.

Delve into your dreams and desires, and come out with your destiny! sdk 2008

If you don't look deeply into The Secret (I read the book, but have not seen the movie), it's easy to assume that it is trying to tell you that all you need to do is think about something and that it will magically appear in front of you. That's just not the case.

If you actaully read deeply (and THINK deeply - I know that's hard for most people) - you'll find that the main point of The Secret is to THINK POSITIVELY. It does not say that you don't have to work for your success. In fact, it says specifically that you DO have to work toward what you want while keeping you end goal in mind. This is SETTING A GOAL. It's what successful people already do.

Don't dismiss The Secret out of hand - just like any other self-help book out there, it is based on an idea that is positive. The Secret was actually more comprehensive about what it teaches than most other self-helps books I've read or heard about. But they all have something to learn in them - if you think deeply and look for it.

Namaste,

Napolean Hill covers a similar topic in "Think and Grow Rich", and I do believe there is some truth to it. It's a great book, and a must-read for any entrepreneur.

While I agree with some of the comments you make John, I do believe this movie should be taken with a grain of salt. I dont see harm in trying to focus on more positive things in life

The Secret is the latest and by far the worst example of a HIGHLY profitable trend where self-help gurus with fabricated new age titles and little relevant education, credentials or legitimate expertise brainwash us into believing that they know what is best for us, our marriages and our families.

Often their only contribution to society is introducing some exotic sounding, new age philosophy. However, they often cleverly form an incestuous group of like-minded “experts” who cross-promote each other by swearing their success is due to following the beliefs of another member of their “cult!” All the while, they ply the airwaves jockeying for an ever-larger audience by appearing in the national media to garner third-party endorsements.

The Self-Help Movement has become the Self-Destruct Movement by diminishing or destroying our critical thinking skills to choose and evolve on our own. We have given up the freedom to build healthy lives, marriages and families based on our unique history and life experience. Instead many victims, blinded to the value of their own life experiences, are attracted to the latest secret in self-help, in an attempt to find out what they should think, feel and how they should act... this is the definition of a cult.

The solution is a return to our (common) senses! The best way out of this learned “self-helplessness” is to go cold turkey. Stop following ALL self-help gurus now. Begin, instead, to reclaim your natural, God-given ability to think for yourself. The common sense that was once readily available to all of us is still there free of charge and waiting to be applied to just about any challenge we might face in life… all you have to do is use it.

Please, let's all work together to stop the flock of "sheepeople" who blindly move from one UNPROVEN concept to the next, looking for the answers to life's challenges that you already possess and that is the OBVIOUS!

You get what you put into life, and faith in yourself, "The Universe", and God (whichever God that might be for you) is going to give back.

Not for nothing, but how many spiritual and faith-filled people do you know who are miserable? Think about it.

I've always said that I don't care what someone decides to believe in, as long as it's positive, and they have faith in SOMEthing. If "The Secret", less the religious part of it, works for someone, then so be it. Who are any of the skeptics to hate on people for wanting to make their lives better, or how they go about doing/believing they can do it?

I love "The Secret" - not because of any other reason than it helped me reinvest myself and rediscover my faith in life. If that doesn't "do it for you", then so be it. If you want to remain working a dead-end job because you "have to" and not because you love to, or if you want to keep putting off re-siding your home because you can't afford it, then sit there and do nothing. But don't you dare complain!

"The Secret" is NOT about "ask and ye shall receive" though it might come off that way to one who doesn't really get into it with an open mind and heart. And that's okay. But to criticize others for their faith in it is just flat out wrong, and yes, it makes me laugh. Those kinds of people are the "Negative Nancy" types that make those of us who believe in the power of positive thinking ALL THAT MUCH MORE RIGHT! ;)

Great to hear from you all. Very interesting to see the positive changes that you've all experienced.

It's only been a couple of days since I've started readjusting my line of thinking, from pessimist to optimist, and while I haven't "attracted" anything yet, I do think that overall I am feeling better and happier.

I'm trying to visualize success, and make it seem like a not so distant reality. This is actually really motivating, because I believe myself more than I ever did, and work now feels as if it has a greater purpose.

Regardless of the actual "attraction" outcome, it should definitely be worth to focus as much on the positive aspects of life as possible. Why be unhappy?
