But I do think there is value in what they sell to people who are willing to apply the concepts. You could say the same thing about the make money niche. Everyone is running around looking for the silver platter. They buy and buy, and while they do get genuinely good information that can make them money, they never put it to work because they want the easy way. So they continue buying based on promises and hype. BUT, while some of your points may apply to other self-help materials, I think you've got it wrong about the secret. The secret doesn't tell you how to live, and I think calling it a cult just because it suggests a more positive outlook on life is a little out there. There's no brainwashing here :P What I took from it was to take my focus away from self-destructive thoughts, and put it towards achieving my goals. Visualize what I *want*, and believing that it is within my reach; that's good motivation! The secret tells you plain and simple; you are in control of your own destiny. Are we even aware how often we get sucked into the negativity? I started wearing whats called a wellness bracelet, and the object is not to complain about stupid things, life is to short and that negativity just balls up all around us, and encompasses us and the disease begins. You put it on your left wrist, and when you begin to complain, it goes to the right wrist. Heck, I didn't even make it out the door in the morning and its on the right wrist! I think that if we would spend more time imagining the better side instead of ripping people apart and being in such heated competitions all the time, we can manifest alot of what we wish for. However, they often cleverly form an incestuous group of like-minded “experts” who cross-promote each other by swearing their success is due to following the beliefs of another member of their “cult!” All the while, they ply the airwaves jockeying for an ever-larger audience by appearing in the national media to garner third-party endorsements. The Self-Help Movement has become the Self-Destruct Movement by diminishing or destroying our critical thinking skills to choose and evolve on our own. We have given up the freedom to build healthy lives, marriages and families based on our unique history and life experience. Instead many victims, blinded to the value of their own life experiences, are attracted to the latest secret in self-help, in an attempt to find out what they should think, feel and how they should act... this is the definition of a cult. Not for nothing, but how many spiritual and faith-filled people do you know who are miserable? Think about it. It's only been a couple of days since I've started readjusting my line of thinking, from pessimist to optimist, and while I haven't "attracted" anything yet, I do think that overall I am feeling better and happier.
