Just a couple of days ago, I broke into the top 10k most popular blogs on Technorati. A blog’s ranking is calculated based on their “authority” algorithm, which is basically how many different blogs link to yours in the last six months.
Sure, it’s pretty exciting to be assigned this ranking, but like most blog metrics, it’s probably not as meaningful as most people think. Technorati authority has virtually no correlation to how good the blog actually is, it’s just a popularity contest.
Nevertheless, it really doesn’t hurt to try and climb the technorati ladder. That’s because while this is an imperfect measure of your blog’s “authority”, it’s pretty much the best one out there. That’s why many advertisers take note of this statistic, along with things like Alexa rank, Google page rank, and RSS subscribers.
So, how did I break into the top 10k blogs in just a few short months? Read my top 5 ways to boost your Technorati authority after the jump!
1. Memes
Blog memes are like viral linking wild fire. If you’re a blogger, I’m sure you’ve been tagged by a few of these before, and you may hate them, but the reality is that these are one of the best ways to get easy link backs.
Meme topics can be about anything really, like asking fun questions, talking about your favorite bloggers, or even telling a secret. These are all nice, but if you want to participate in a meme for link building, then you absolutely cannot go wrong with a link-centric meme.
Let me give you an example of probably the best link bait meme I’ve seen to date.
This meme is called the “Big Bang Meme“, this is just one participant’s entry. If you read how to participate, it’s pretty much like a chain letter; you add your name to the end and pass it along. There are almost 450 entrants on this post alone, and I’m sure many more have participated since then.
Now, the creator, who I assume is the #1 spot, has been included in at least those 450 peoples blogs, along with any others that aren’t on that list (the list spreads in different directions). Because of this genius meme, his authority has climbed to over 1000, ranking him almost within the top 2500 blogs!
Of course, only the people who got into that meme early saw the full benefits, so instead of trying to participate in every meme you see, why not try and create one of your own! I created The Entrecard Top 10 Card Droppers Meme a couple of months ago, and it had some pretty decent results!
Think of an idea where linking is the main focal point of the meme, and you might start a new viral linking sensation!
2. Sponsor Big Contests
This is another technique that has worked really well for me. I’m sure you’ve seen a lot of mega contests where there are dozens of prizes being offered, like The “One Heck Of A Giveaway” Contest and The Ultimate Blog Contest.
You’ll notice that on many of these contests, posting a full list of sponsors on a blog earns many entries into the contests. By sponsoring a prize, you are included in those listings, and technorati will credit you with the link back, thereby boosting your authority.
Of course, you could also run your own contest as well, and make posting about it a criteria for entry. It is tough to get people to enter though without lots of promotion and super interesting prizes, so if you can’t manage that, sponsoring is definitely the way to go!
3. Distribute Articles / Guest Post
This is a new one for me, but one that has worked very well so far. Recently, I bought a subscription to Unique Article Wizard, and what it does is it distributes hundreds of unique copies of your articles to many article directories and, more importantly in this case, “all article” blogs.
They are pretty much just like article directories, except with blogging software. Technorati does include these in their index, so you can get a serious influx of backlinks after just one article submission.
I can’t talk to much about the details of how they do this, since I’m actually under confidentiality agreement, but I’ll be bringing a full review of the service in a few weeks, once I have fully tested it. So far though, it’s worked very well!
The manual version of this by the way, is to guest post on other blogs. This is a lot more work, but is so much more meaningful. Your post will be seen by lots of regular readers, and they may enjoy your writing and favorite your blog as well.
4. Link Bait Posts
You’ve got to give love to get love. As a blogger, I’m sure you read plenty of other blogs, so why not link to posts you like? This will not only give your readers some interesting stuff to check out, but perhaps the blogger you linked to will one day link back to you.
Just remember, linking to the big A-list bloggers won’t accomplish much (unless you yourself are one). Link to bloggers who are active and closer to your level. Not only will you get links this way, you will surely make new friends among the blogosphere.
5. Write Great Content
On it’s own, it doesn’t do anything for your technorati ranking, but it’s pretty much the most important thing there is to blogging.
Ever want anyone to purposly link back to you, you’ve got to have great content.
Ever want to guest post on other people’s blogs, you’ve got to have great content.
Ever want to have people republish your articles, you’ve got to have great content.
Ever want to be contacted by other bloggers to collaborate, you’ve got to have great content.
Ok, I think I’ve got the point across. Because Technorati authority means absolutely nothing unless you are pumping out great content.
I hope this guide gives you some ideas about how you can boost your own Technorati authority and rank. While it’s fun to climb the ranks, it should not be your main priority.
Keep writing great content, and you’ll see results thousands of times better than anything Technorati can do for you.

Congrats on making the top 10k. However, if you have no ethics, you can join in on one of those “Fav me up” trains.
For a blogger who just recently launched a new blog, this is a very good piece of information. Thanks.
Good tips and sound advice. Only problem I see is that Technorati only knows US or UK based article “republishers”. Sure, I could write articles in English, but I won’t translate my blog and other sites. Foreign content = no love. For the time being.
In response to Karlonia’s comment - what about automatic pinging? I’ve setup my Wordpress blog to ping out on all new posts; would that not be a more effective method? Are there benefits to manually pinging?
Thanks for the tips - there are many good ones here!
J.
Hey Jonathan, Karlonia was referring to pinging OTHER peoples’ sites that are linking to you. You can’t auto ping other’s sites, but you can manually ping them using the technorati ping form.
Automatically pinging your own site though is always a good idea, it will make technorati update your stats and crawl your site.
